Sports fans around the world know the Paris-Roubaix race as one of the most grueling cycling events in the world. This race, known as the “Hell of the North”, has been held annually since 1896 and is considered one of the most important sections of the UCI World Tour.
The Paris-Roubaix race is a one-day event that takes place in northern France. It begins in the city of Compiègne, located northeast of Paris and ends in Roubaix.
On 9 April, the peloton of the 120th edition will battle it out on a 256.6 km course with 54.5 km of cobbles spread out over 29 sectors, the first of which comes 160 km from the line. Each sector is rated on a scale from one to five stars.
The cobbled sections of the Paris-Roubaix race are what truly set it apart from other cycling events. These cobbles, which are some of the oldest in the world, are made of small stones and often quite uneven. This makes for a bumpy and tiring ride, which is why the race is so difficult. The most feared ones are, among others; at 165 km: Trouée d'Arenberg, at 212 km: Mons-en-Pévèle and the cruel: Carrefour de l'Arbre at a whopping 243 km.
